Otay Mesa opened in 1983, about 5 miles east of San Ysidro, to divert commercial truck traffic away from downtown. It is now the third-busiest commercial crossing on the U.S.-Mexico border and the only one of the two Tijuana ports that handles trucks, alongside passenger vehicles and pedestrians.
