The Gateway bridge, known in Matamoros as the Puente Nuevo, links downtown Matamoros with downtown Brownsville, a block from UTRGV. It opened in 1926 and carries the large majority of Brownsville’s pedestrian traffic, with many people parking on one side and walking across. Trucks have been barred since 1999.
